Maintenance Requirements for an Ultraviolet System
- Generally speaking, maintenance should be performed on an ultraviolet system once-per-year.
- The service should include:
- replacement of the 5 micron prefilter
- removal and cleaning of the quartz sleeve
- replacement of the lamp
- resetting the alarm or counter - depending on the model
- If you have hardness over 7gpg or iron above 0.3ppm, you will have to clean the sleeve more frequently. Certain minerals and other contaminants can coat the sleeve and hinder the transmission of the light to the water, possibly resulting in unsafe water.
- If you have any color in the water, for instance during spring runoff, this color can absorb the UV light before it has a chance to inactivate the microbes you are trying to treat, again rendering the water unsafe to consume.
