Maintenance Requirements for a Reverse Osmosis Undersink Filter System
Purpose
To ensure continued trouble free operation of your drinking water filter system
Service Schedule:
- Once per year, you should have your unit serviced.
- If the taste of the water changes or your monitor indicates, you should
have your membrane checked out.
Operating Instructions for a Reverse Osmosis System
At the Time of Initial Installation:
- Allow system to drip at the faucet for at least one hour.
- Open the tank shut off valve on top of the storage tank. (This will cause
water to flow from the faucet at a normal rate.)
- When the flow has slowed to a drip again (about 5 minutes), shut off
faucet by lowering the black (white) handle to the horizontal position.
- After about 4-5 hours, drain the tank (see below *). Discard this water.
- Close the faucet. The water will now be good to drink.
- Keep an eye out for any puddles of water in your cabinet base and call
us if you discover any. It’s a good idea not to fill up the cabinet
until you make sure there are no leaks, otherwise leaks may not be detectable
until sometime later when damage could have occurred. (We cannot be held
responsible for leaks that have happened since the installation but are
not discovered until a week or more later.)
- The monitor may show red (amber) for a day or so, then it should be green.
After Yearly Service
- Drain the tank after about 4-5 hours after service is complete) - see
below * - and discard this water. (There may be some residual carbon and
bleach solution left over from the service call.)
- Check the cabinet for any leaks four or so hours after the service call.
- The monitor may show red (amber) for a day or so, then it should be green.
After Membrane Is Replaced
• Follow instructions for “Initial Installation” above.
If You Have a Refrigerator Hookup
- If you have a refrigerator water dispenser hook up, after you have drained
the tank (above) and allowed it to refill, drain and discard 2-3 quarts
of water through the refrigerator reservoir, then dump the first several
batches of ice.
- If you have a refrigerator icemaker hook up only, wait until the tank
has refilled with good water and then dump the first several batches of
ice.
- There will be a refrigerator line shut-off ball valve under the sink
in case your refrigerator needs servicing or for any other reason.
Ongoing Care and Procedures
- First thing in the morning, you should dump about a half a cupful to
drain to clear any water that has been sitting in the faucet and lines.
- About once a month, it is a good idea to completely drain the storage
tank. You can use this water for any purpose - drinking, watering plants,
cooking pasta, filling humidifiers, etc.
- If you have a monitor keep an eye out on it- call us if it turns red
(or amber – depending on the monitor). If your monitor is under the
sink, remember to check it routinely! Occasionally when the light indicates
that service is required, the batteries are low. In this case, simply changing
the batteries will prevent a service call. A screw (or screws) holds the
back in place and when removed, reveals the battery.
*Draining the Tank:
Open the faucet by lifting up on the handle and allowing
the water to drain until the flow reduces to a trickle. This may take 5-10
minutes depending on your arrangement. Then shut the faucet off by returning
the faucet handle to its off (horizontal) position.
Your Reverse Osmosis System is a valuable investment - yearly service calls
will keep it operating efficiently for many years.
